Totally Stoked Community

Let me take you to a place. It’s late October, 45 degrees and misting out. The leaves are down and the firewood in. It’s nearly dark and you have an early season fire going. Its flares and flutters fill the room. There’s just enough light to sit down and take in the newest issue of the 30th Anniversary volume of Backcountry Magazine. Within a minute, you’re far away from home. Not lost, just…out there!

From a far away (or very close to home depending) village in Vermont’s Green Mountains, Height of Land Publications has been a huge part of taking you out there for 23 years. Like Backcountry, our award-winning titles Cross Country Skier, Alpinist and Mountain Flyer don’t just celebrate our individual mountain experiences, they sew them together into the communities that define us. Today, we’re asking for your support as we reimagine outdoor media and HOL’s place in this global community we love. 

Starting this wood burning season, Backcountry will focus even more on growing our community of readers by making fatter books, with more stories, photography, art and design while at the same time investing in an immersive online and in-person experience that brings us together like never before. It will take time but with your help we can both sustain our values—quality, transparency, independence—and be more meaningful to the global communities we serve through this new effort.
